AC Not Cooling in Dubai? Check These 7 Things Before You Call Anyone

AC cleaning in Dubai — technician servicing a split unit

It is the most stressful sound in a Dubai home: the AC running, and the air coming out… warm. Before you panic — and before you pay anyone — work through this list. In our experience, a good share of “my AC stopped cooling” calls in Dubai come down to one of these seven things, and the first few you can check yourself in minutes.

1. The Filter Is Choking

Dubai dust is relentless, and the filter eats all of it. A clogged filter strangles the airflow, cooling drops off, and the unit works harder for less. Slide the filters out (most split units have a lift-up front panel) and look at them against the light. If you cannot see light through them, wash them, let them dry fully, and refit. Filters here should be cleaned every few weeks in the dusty months, not once a year.

2. The Thermostat Is Set Wrong (It Happens Constantly)

Check the mode first: it should be on COOL (the snowflake), not FAN or DRY — a remote knocked onto fan mode by a child has caused more emergency calls than we can count. Then the temperature: set it a few degrees below the room and give it twenty minutes. Setting 16°C does not cool a room faster; it just runs the machine flat out.

3. The Outdoor Unit Is Suffocating

If your balcony or the area around the outdoor unit has become storage — boxes, plants, a drying rack against the coil — the unit cannot dump heat, and cooling suffers. Clear at least a metre around it. Also check the coil fins are not matted with dust and sand; after a shamal, they often are.

4. Doors, Windows and the Midday Sun

In July and August, an AC fighting an open balcony door or west-facing glass with no curtains is losing fairly. If cooling drops mainly in the afternoon in one room, heat load may be the whole story. Close curtains on the sunny side and check the door seals.

5. Water Dripping Means the Drain Is Blocked

A drip from the indoor unit is not a cooling fault, but it travels with them: the drain line clogs with dust and slime, water backs up, and the unit may shut off or cool poorly. Do not ignore it — that water ends up in your ceiling and wall. This one needs a technician to clear properly.

6. The Unit Is Iced Up

If you can see ice on the indoor coil or the pipes, switch the unit off and let it thaw. Ice usually means airflow is badly restricted (back to point 1) or the system is low on gas. Running it frozen makes things worse.

7. It Cools, But Weakly, and the Bill Is Climbing

Weak cooling plus a rising DEWA bill is the classic sign of a system that needs a proper service — coils deep-cleaned, gas level checked, the works. A unit cleaned properly cools faster and uses less power doing it. Twice-yearly cleaning is the rhythm that works in Dubai’s dust.

When to Call

If you have checked the filter, the mode, and the outdoor unit, and the air is still warm after half an hour — call. Weak cooling rarely fixes itself, and a small fault today (a tired capacitor, a slow gas leak) is a dead compressor next month.
